The equestrian statue of János Hunyadi

History

The equestrian statue stands on the side of Széchenyi Square in Pécs.

The statue was unveiled in 1956 to commemorate the triumph of Nándorfehérvár and the 500th anniversary of the hero's death. The city's idea was to place it in the place of the Holy Trinity, but the artist chose the south-eastern part of the square, saying that a statue of a horseman has a side view. The placement proved Pátzay right, as the sculpture is visible from all directions and is immediately visible. And thanks to the sculptor, the plague column was saved.
