A mystical network of hollows has formed over some ten thousand years in the loose structured, thick layer of travertine. The pits were artificially expanded by human hands through the centuries, additional passages being dug into the mountain. In this way a minor labyrinth-system came into being under the surface. Once these underground cavities also served as dwelling spaces, some of which can be seen even today. The Tettye Cave has been a tourist attraction since the beginning of the twentieth century. It was called the “gate of hell” back then. A formidable dragon can be seen inside too.
Guided walk takes you around the underground labyrinth in about 40 minutes.
