History

Bishop Szepesy did a lot for the development of science in the city. He established a printing house, the law academy of Pécs, and also expanded the collection of the first public library established by Bishop Klimo by more than four thousand items.

The bronze statue that was erected in his honor stands on a grey granite pedestal and was handed over to the city in 1893. It is the work of György Kiss, one of the popular sculptors of the city. In his work the High Priest is walking down the steps of the pulpit, the Bible clasped firmly in his hand. Several citizens of Pécs think that this is the most beautiful statue of the city.
