HISTORY

The Parish Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, located in the city centre, is the most significant Turkish-Islamic monument in Hungary and the most unique Turkish monument in Hungary.Through the donkey-arched, beehive-patterned windows, pleasant greenish-yellowish lights illuminate the interior of the church. You can admire the beautifully decorated mihrab, the prayer seat facing Mecca, and on parts of the wall you can make out the calligraphic lines of the Koran. Next to the sacristy, you can see the washing basins used in the former baths of Qasim Pasha of Gaza. The visitor can explore the fascinating meeting place of East and West, the sacred spaces where different religions interact with each other, with the help of modern equipment, exciting interactive elements and animations. The church, a symbol of Pécs, will thus give visitors an insight into the history and appearance of the building, which has taken different forms in different ages.
