Máré Castle

The small fortress of Maré Castle is located on a steep, forested hilltop 340 metres above sea level, on the outskirts of Magyaregregy.

The tiny, irregularly shaped castle was built in the Gothic style in the 13th century, during the period of the great post-Tatar castle constructions. The first written record of the castle dates back to 1316. Later, in the 16th century, it was rebuilt in Renaissance style. It was destroyed during the Turkish occupation. Later, the castle, which was also important for its military ruins, was used by the Turks as a garrison. In the 17th century, it is mentioned as an abandoned ruin as the property of the Bishop of Pécs. After that, the castle stood abandoned for nearly 300 years, its ruins visited only by tourists. The remains were restored during archaeological excavations in the 20th century.

Nowadays, the castle museum houses an exhibition on the history of the castle and the wildlife of the Eastern Meuse. You can find all the information you need about the castle with its love legend dating back to the Middle Ages. Climbing up the wooden staircase, you are surrounded by a rare blend of history and nature.

Opening hours:
Maré Castle opens on 30 April 2022 and will be open until 1 November, five days a week, from Wednesday to Sunday, from 10 am to 6 pm. Unfortunately, we are unable to welcome visitors on public holidays (Mondays and Tuesdays)!
