History

The inner courtyard, named after the famous architect József Hild, is located in the block on the south-west corner of Széchenyi Square.

Several famous families of Pécs once lived in the buildings surrounding the Hild courtyard. The eclectic building on the northern side, which is still in its present form, was bought by the architect József Piatsek in 1816 and converted into a tenement house that met the needs of the time. On the Széchenyi Square side of the block are two late Baroque buildings, owned by the Hoitsy family for almost 100 years from the mid-18th century. The late 19th century eclectic building on the south side once belonged to the Schönherr family. The Hild courtyard is often the venue for musical events. The former Piatsek and Hoitsy houses are now home to the House of Arts, which hosts the most important cultural events in Pécs.
