Ágoston Square

There was already a church on the site of today's Ágoston Square in the Middle Ages which was demolished or rebuilt by the Turks. The window openings in the south wall suggest that it was a Turkish building or a mosque. The Augustinian monks built their monastery and church on the eastern side of the square in 1712. The church burnt down in a fire in 1750, but was soon restored. In 1912 the Baroque church was rebuilt. The 'whirlpool' was designed by the architect Sándor Dévényi to accommodate the Tettye stream, which became possible after the Tettye park was built.
