Wine and gastronomy

Pécs, which is proud to possess the title of „The City of Grape and Wine” (International Organization of Vine and Wine, OI V), is also the centre of gastronomy in the region. Although we may learn about the far-famed wines of the Pécs vineyards only in some old chronicles because the development of the town engulfed them, Pécs still cherishes the traditions of viticulture. Wine producers and experts are busy trying to plant vineyards along the side of the Mecsek Mountains again. More and more award winning wines coming from the Pécs wine region are placed on the tables and an increasing number of wine producers join the Pécs-Mecsek Wine Route as a service provider. (1) At the same time the number of programmes, non-profit organizations, wine clubs and wine orders related to wine and gastronomy increases every year. The offer of the restaurants in the field of wine and gastronomy is also making considerable progress.
