AttractionsPécs has always been a must-see destination because of its World Heritage sites, its monuments from the Turkish era, its ecclesiastical buildings and traditions, its famous Zsolnay heritage, and its rich art collections. A show-place of the historical old town is the Cella Septichora Visitor Centre under Szent István (St. Stephen) square with its 4th-century late Roman, early Christian sepulchral buildings, painted burial chambers and sepulchres unique in Central Europe, which were added to the UNESCO World Heritage Sites list in 2000. Each building of Káptalan Street houses a museum: the world-famous Zsolnay Porcelain Museum; the Vasarely Museum exhibiting the life-work of Pécs-born artist Victor Vasarely with the most complete collection in Europe; the Modern Hungarian Gallery exhibiting remarkable masterpieces of 20th-century Hungarian avant-garde visual arts and the International Collection of foreign artists; the Ferenc Martyn and Amerigo Tot Museums; Pierre Székely’s Stone Garden; and the sculpture composition “Street” by Erzsébet Schaár welcome guests in a renewed condition in 2010. The Neo-Romanesque Cathedral of the bishopric of Pécs founded in 1009 and the surrounding buildings offer a view that can match even the unpaired beauty of Italian squares. The Roman stone carving collection of the Cathedral Museum represent a matchless value. Pécs also is a city of contemporary visual arts; walking in the old town the works of local artists can be seen both in public spaces and art galleries. | | | |
